Day 1: Auckland


  • Arrive into Auckland, uplift rental van and drive to your accommodation or holiday park.
  • Auckland is New Zealand's largest city with a population of 1.3 million. It is situated between the Manukau and Waitamata Harbours and is built around more than 40 volcano cones, creating a beautiful landscape.
  • Exploring Auckland's highlights including Auckland Museum, Kelly Tarlton's Underwater and Antarctic Centre, views from Mt Eden and One Tree Hill and the waterfront to name a few.
  • Visit the wild west coast beaches of Piha, Murawai and Karekare which are located only 45 minutes from the city centre. Visit Bees on Line in Kumeu which is located on the way to Murawai and is a great cafe and beehive.
  • Ensure you make the most of the fantastic restaurant districts of Parnell, Ponsonby and the Viaduct Basin.

Day 2: Auckland - Waitomo (200km/2:50hr) - Rotorua (166km/2:20hr)


  • Head south over the Bombay Hills then turning west at Ngaruawahia continuing on through to Otrohonga and then the Waitomo Caves.
  • Take a 2 hour tour of the glowworm caves before continuing south east and onto Rotorua.
  • Rainbow Springs is also very well worth visiting, and children especially are fascinated by the pools of trout and of course the chance to see a real kiwi. They also are open at night which is spectacular under lights and open until 9pm.

Day 3: Rotorua


  • Visit highlights of Rotorua including the geysers and bubbling mud pools of Te Puia's geothermal and Maori cultural centre.
  • Your children will enjoy the Agrodome Sheep Show which is very entertaining and worth going to.
  • In the evening visit you will drive out to Maitai Maori Village to experience a traditional hangi meal and a cultural show.

Day 4: Rotorua - Taupo (76km/1:00hr)


  • A short drive onto New Zealand's largest lake, Lake Taupo which is located in the centre of the North Island.
  • It is well worth stopping at Orakei Korako Cave and Thermal park located between Rotorua and Taupo.
  • 10km just out before you reach Taupo on SH5, you will come across a turn off to The Aratiatia Rapids and at several specific times each day spill gates from a dam are opened at the top of the Aratiatia rapids and the narrow gorge fills with turbulent water surging past. There are several excellent vantage points on the high rock bluffs that dominate this turbulent stretch of the river..

Day 5: Taupo - Wanaganui (224km/3:15hr)


  • You may want to take a Chris Jolley Cruise out to view the Maori carvings on Lake Taupo. This is a 1.5hr trip.
  • You may want to take a charter to try your hand at trout fishing on Lake Taupo.
  • Visit the awesome Huka Falls at Taupo and then go for an exhilarating ride aboard the Huka Jet which takes you up the Waikato river up to the base of the falls.
  • Continue down the south side of Lake Taupo, then head west around past the Tongairo National Park, down State Highway 4 onto Wanganui.
  • Located on the West Coast of New Zealand's North Island, Wanganui is picturisque river city, famous for its heritage and the arts. The Whanganui River runs through Wanganui and forms the core of the district.
  • The Whanganui National Park features a step back in time to beautiful, untouched bush, magnificent views and wildlife.

Day 6: Wanganui - Wellington (191km/2:30hr)


  • Continue south down the west coast, through Levin down the Kapiti Coast and through to Wellington.
  • There is a great car museum just outside of Wellington in Paraparaumu (Southward Museum) which you may want to stop.
  • Wellington is New Zealand's capital city located at the southern tip of the North Island. It has a very vibrant inner city and great water front.

Day 7: Wellington


  • Wellington is the political capital of New Zealand and you can visit the government buildings in the morning including the Beehive.
  • Discover at Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa - five floors of treasured exhibits and interactive displays. It's an entertaining way to find out about New Zealand, arguably one of the best interactive museums in the world.
  • The harbour of Wellington is stunning, so be sure to take in the great waterfront especially from the top of Mt Victoria.
  • Visit the urban conservation Karori Sanctuary - The Sanctuary marked a turning point in the conservation and recovery of native wildlife on mainland New Zealand when it formed in 1995, reversing a decline that has lasted for at least 700 years. The sanctuary comprises 225 hectares (one square mile) of regenerating lowland forest and wetlands protected by a unique 8.6 km predator resitance fence.

Day 8: Wellington


  • Return your campervan to the Wellington depot where your arrangements conclude.
