Why no Freedom Camping

Why no Freedom Camping?

The lure of freedom camping does have a certain attraction to many campervan and motorhome tourist, however there are a number of reasons why we strongly suggest that you use a campground or holiday park when for overnight stays in New Zealand.

  • Environment: New Zealand is a particularly clean and natural environment, and we want to keep it that way. The advent of freedom camping has seen an increase in pollution around some of our most scenic areas, and there is an associated cost for the clean up of this which is starting to frustrate many communicates.
  • Security: Although New Zealand is a very safe destination by international standards, we still have crime in the country. In recent years there has been some cases of tourists targeted who were freedom camping. They would have been far more secure if they had been parked up at a campground or holiday park.
  • Law: There are many places that you cannot freedom camp in New Zealand, and local councils are extending these 'no camp' zone on a regular basis as they battle with the problems associated with freedom camping.

Campground and Holiday Parks provide a great service, convenience and value. For the small amount it costs to stay in a holiday park or campground, it makes no sense to risk yourself or the environment by freedom camping.
