$20K fines for freedom campers - 04 Marth 2011
Freedom campers in the Southern Lakes district can now be fined up to $20,000 after a new control bylaw was adopted this week. The Queenstown Lakes District Council at a meeting in Wanaka has adopted the freedom camping control bylaw that means anyone camping outside a licensed camping ground, in "No Freedom Camping" zones, will face a fine of between $300 and $20,000. The Southland Times says provisions would be made for legitimate family or group campers who applied for discretionary clearance.
